Viktor Shklovsky referred to it as defamiliarization. It is an idea that art is supposed to frustrate our senses into seeing things as though those things were new. It is the idea that art is supposed to make us freshly aware of the things we see, hear, read or think about everyday but remain familiar to us. Art being used to defamiliarize us shocks us into thinking about or seeing things differently is the idea that art is supposed to make us Look Twice.

Basis for the Site
So, after my last post, I got to thinking about this idea of defamiliarization and felt like I needed to familiarize myself with it to be honest. So follow this link and check out what Shklovsky himself said about defamiliarization. In this piece of literary criticism, he basically lays out his view of what art is and what the purpose of art is in society. It is his famous essay about defamiliarization itself.
